The First 100 Days

Imagine what can happen in 100 days. It’s not uncommon for employers to have a 90-day probationary period for new employees. In this time, employers use it to judge the performance of employees. The presidency is no different. It was not until the 32nd president, Franklin D. Roosevelt took office that the first 100 days in office were newsworthy. It was FDR that passed 76 laws in the first 100 days of his presidency; 13 of which were major laws. Since then, it has been a vital benchmark of effectiveness in our political world.

President Joe Biden’s first day in office he signed over a dozen executive actions and three executive orders. The three orders, signed in the presence of reporters, included implementing a mask mandate on federal property, increasing support for underserved communities, and rejoining the Paris climate accord.

The actions signed spanned over the following:

  • COVID-19 response
  • Financial relief for Americans
  • Environment
  • Human Rights
  • Immigration
  • Regulations
  • Ethics

On Thursday, Biden announced an executive action that is meant to help schools across the nation reopen within the first 100 days. He stated that he would sign several executive actions to push the process along for what he called a “national emergency.” If schools reopen within the first 100 days, parents can expect the students to return by April.

The details of these actions would include the following:

  • More personal protective equipment – reimbursement for masks, gloves, etc.
  • More testing – access for teachers and students
  • Vaccines for teachers
  • Better data – national data collection of cases and outbreaks in schools

Given all the circumstances, these plans are extremely ambitious. Questions remain about whether these actions are doable during a global pandemic. Will President Biden’s first 100 days be as newsworthy or more than President Roosevelt’s?
