Training Drivers for Fuel Efficiency

With constant fluctuations in price, fleet owners are becoming much more conscious of their fueling spend.  Some may shop around to find more cost effective supply options, while others are looking at newer technologies to increase fuel efficiencies.  Most of us have seen smart phone applications for everything it seems, but now trucking companies are more regularly looking into newer apps as a fuel optimization solution.  Two companies in particular are setting the standard for over the road truckers in this category.

Pedal Coach by LinkeDrive believes that 30% of fuel economy can be controlled by the operator.  Their system operates by connecting a smart device to the truck dash through the diagnostic ports and providing a user interface for drivers.  The flow rate of fuel is represented by a needle on a digital gauge which drivers can adaptively control through progressive shifting and smart acceleration.  At the end of each trip, drivers receive a fuel efficiency score on a 100-point scale.  Owners can access a web portal to track drivers in their fleet on a regular basis and can also receive daily and monthly reporting.

Fleet owners can also opt for an alternate in-cab platform in Vnomics’ TrueFuel.  With this app, drivers hear audible tones when improperly shifting, speeding, or idling in order to help coach them on efficient driving techniques.  TrueFuel also analyzes engine data and compares actual fuel usage in real time with the potential MPG.  Similar to Pedal Coach, drivers are given a score of 1-100 and comprehensive analytics are available to owners along with driver scorecards.

With these types of changes being more readily introduced to the trucking industry, one could hope that these advancements and savings could lead to increased driver satisfaction and retention.
